The species that Aurora and Thing are are known as Embotes. Embotes are the embodiment of random things, with Aurora being the northern lights and Thing being weirdness. The average Embote has a lifespan of 1 month, maturing in a week. In order for an Embote to live, they need either:
Divine intervention (Aurora)
OR
A living host (Thing)
Divine beings can grant immortality, so that's pretty self-explanatory.
If an Embote is able to get a living host, they will live as long as the host. They can gain a living host by simply invading their mind, and becoming part of them.
